A massive flash flood in Nepal has killed at least 538 people and left 977 others missing, after torrents of water, ice and debris swept through villages and project sites in the Himalayan region bordering Tibet. The disaster has triggered a large-scale rescue operation, with authorities warning of further risks following the bursting of a debris dam in Tibet on Friday.
Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority said 14,829 security personnel have been mobilised for search and rescue operations. So far, 3,742 people have been rescued from affected areas. Emergency teams are continuing to search for survivors while authorities have urged rescuers in vulnerable locations to move to safer areas amid the threat of renewed flooding.
The United States Geological Survey has described the disaster as the deadliest in Nepal since the 2015 earthquake. According to the agency, a glacial collapse triggered a massive flow of icy debris, creating destructive torrents that moved through the mountainous region. The flooding also resulted in large pools of water forming, raising concerns among emergency workers operating in areas still vulnerable to sudden surges.
The floodwaters surged through the Bhote Koshi River, reportedly from the direction of Tibet, causing extensive destruction in Timure in Rasuwa district and the nearby Syafrubesi area. A sudden rise in the river’s water level damaged settlements and infrastructure, leaving rescue teams facing difficult conditions while trying to reach isolated locations.
The Nepal Prime Minister’s Office has directed the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police to intensify rescue and relief operations in Rasuwa and surrounding areas. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation following the reported bursting of the debris dam in Tibet, which could send additional torrents downstream and pose fresh challenges to personnel searching for missing people.
The disaster has also affected Indian nationals, with 21 people from India arriving in Delhi after being evacuated from Nepal. Rescue and relief agencies remain engaged in the ongoing operation as authorities assess the extent of damage and continue efforts to locate those still missing.
