NATO Seeks Details as Pentagon Plans to Pull 5,000 Troops From Germany Over Next Year

US plans troop withdrawal from Germany; NATO seeks details amid rising transatlantic tensions.

NATO has sought clarity from the United States after Washington announced plans to withdraw around 5,000 troops from Germany, a move that comes amid growing tensions in transatlantic relations linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict and trade disputes. The decision was confirmed by the Pentagon, which said the withdrawal would be carried out over the next six to twelve months following a review of US military posture in Europe. Officials stated that the move reflects evolving operational requirements and conditions on the ground, though it has raised concerns among allies about long-term security commitments.

The announcement follows a public exchange between US President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, highlighting diplomatic strains. The disagreement was triggered by remarks from Merz regarding Iran’s position in negotiations, which drew a sharp response from Trump. The development also coincides with Washington’s decision to impose higher tariffs on European Union vehicle imports, further complicating relations.

As of December 31, 2025, Germany hosted 36,436 active-duty US troops, significantly more than other European allies such as Italy and Spain. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said the reduction was anticipated, while NATO indicated it is consulting closely with US authorities to understand the scope and implications of the decision for regional security.

NATO officials emphasised that the move underscores the need for European nations to increase defence spending and take on a larger share of responsibility for collective security. The alliance reiterated that coordination is ongoing within its institutional framework to ensure that any changes in troop deployment do not undermine deterrence or operational readiness across Europe.

The troop withdrawal also comes against the backdrop of broader geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing war in Ukraine and instability in the Strait of Hormuz. European leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to regional defence and support for Ukraine, even as the United States signals a potential recalibration of its military presence in Europe.
