Nathan MacKinnon Leads Hart Trophy Race Ahead of Connor McDavid and Nikita Kucherov

Nathan MacKinnon leads Hart Trophy race over McDavid, Kucherov

The NHL’s Hart Trophy race for 2026 has narrowed to three familiar superstars: Nathan MacKinnon, Connor McDavid, and Nikita Kucherov, all of whom have delivered elite-level performances this regular season. While each candidate has produced exceptional offensive numbers, MacKinnon’s all-around impact has made him the leading favourite for the league’s most valuable player award.

Nathan MacKinnon’s statistical case is both dominant and well-rounded. The Colorado Avalanche forward finished the regular season with 53 goals and 127 points in 80 games, placing him among the top scorers in the NHL. His plus-57 rating led the entire league, reflecting not only offensive production but also strong two-way effectiveness. He also recorded 30 power-play points and seven game-winning goals, repeatedly influencing high-stakes moments throughout the season.

Beyond individual numbers, MacKinnon’s influence on team success strengthens his MVP argument. The Avalanche finished with the best record in the NHL at 55–16–11, securing the Presidents’ Trophy. The team also allowed the fewest goals in the league, sharing the William M. Jennings Trophy recognition. MacKinnon’s consistent production—points in 61 of 80 games and 20 multi-point performances—made him the central driving force behind Colorado’s dominance.

Connor McDavid, meanwhile, once again delivered a historic offensive campaign. The Edmonton Oilers captain led the NHL with 138 points and secured his sixth Art Ross Trophy, further cementing his reputation as the league’s premier playmaker. However, Edmonton’s overall season success lagged behind expectations, finishing with 93 points and exiting in the first round of the playoffs. That team outcome has become a key talking point in assessing his Hart Trophy candidacy.

Nikita Kucherov also maintained his status among the NHL’s elite, recording 130 points and an outstanding 1.71 points-per-game average. His consistency across multiple seasons has earned him a third consecutive finalist nomination. However, compared to MacKinnon’s combination of scoring, defensive responsibility, and team success, Kucherov’s case is viewed as slightly narrower in overall impact.

Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar has described MacKinnon as a “1-of-1” player, highlighting his rare blend of speed, strength, skill, and competitiveness. That complete profile, combined with league-leading advanced metrics and team achievements, gives MacKinnon a compelling edge. While McDavid and Kucherov remain generational offensive talents, the broader scope of value this season appears to tilt the Hart Trophy race firmly toward MacKinnon.
