Nand Kishore Yadav Sworn In As 23rd Governor Of Nagaland In Kohima

Veteran BJP leader Nand Kishore Yadav takes oath as the 23rd Governor of Nagaland in Kohima ceremony.

Veteran politician Nand Kishore Yadav on Friday took oath as the 23rd Governor of Nagaland during a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan in Kohima. The oath of office and secrecy was administered by Ashutosh Kumar, Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several senior officials, including Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Yanthungo Patton and T. R. Zeliang. Members of the state Cabinet, as well as senior civil, security and military officials, were also present at the event, which was conducted by Nagaland Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen. Rio congratulated Yadav and wished him success in his new role as the constitutional head of the state.

The appointment of Yadav came as part of a broader gubernatorial reshuffle announced by Droupadi Murmu, President of India, on March 5. The reshuffle involved the appointment and transfer of Governors and Lieutenant Governors across several states and union territories.

Yadav succeeds Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who had been holding the additional charge of Nagaland since August 25 last year while serving as the Governor of Manipur. Bhalla, a former Union Home Secretary, was assigned the additional responsibility shortly after the death of former Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan on August 15 last year in Chennai at the age of 80.

Seventy-three-year-old Yadav has had a long political career in Bihar. He joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1969 and later became active in the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad in 1971. Over the years, he held several key positions, including serving as president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Bihar unit from 1998 to 2003 and holding multiple ministerial portfolios in the state government.

In February 2024, Yadav was elected as the 17th Speaker of the Bihar Legislative Assembly. A seven-time legislator from the Patna Sahib constituency—formerly known as the Patna Paschim Assembly seat—he is regarded as one of the senior leaders of the BJP in Bihar. His appointment as the Governor of Nagaland is widely seen as recognition of his decades-long contribution to public life and politics.
