Mumbai To See 10% Water Cut As BMC Manages Depleting Water Stock Before Monsoon

Mumbai will face a 10% water cut from May 15 due to falling reserves, says BMC.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has announced a 10% water cut in Mumbai starting May 15, following approval by civic authorities amid rising concerns over depleting water stock levels in the city’s reservoirs. The decision has been taken as part of precautionary measures to manage supply during the pre-monsoon summer period when water demand remains high and inflows are minimal.

The move was cleared by Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide after a review of current storage levels. According to officials, the existing water reserves available to the city are projected to last until August 17 under normal conditions. However, without additional support from the state government, the supply may fall short much earlier, potentially lasting only until July 6.

To prevent a deeper crisis, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has formally requested the Maharashtra government to release additional water from reserve sources. These include key reservoirs such as Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna, which are typically tapped during periods of shortage. Officials said this additional allocation is crucial to maintaining stable water distribution in the city until the arrival of the monsoon.

Every year, Mumbai relies on supplementary water from state-controlled reserves to bridge the gap between rising summer demand and limited lake storage. This system helps the city manage supply during the driest months before seasonal rains replenish reservoir levels. Authorities noted that this year’s demand pattern and storage levels have made early intervention necessary to avoid a more severe shortage.

Civic officials also warned that if the state government is unable to provide additional reserve water, the city may face stricter rationing measures in the coming weeks. The BMC has stated that it is closely monitoring consumption patterns and reservoir levels to ensure equitable distribution across all parts of Mumbai. Further updates are expected depending on rainfall conditions and state-level decisions on water allocation.
