More Cancellations Expected as US Airlines Cut Flights Amid Historic Government Closure

US government shutdown triggers FAA-mandated flight cuts up to 10% at busiest airports over controller shortages.

As the longest government shutdown in US history drags on, airlines across the country have begun canceling hundreds of flights, with more reductions expected in the coming weeks. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), grappling with severe air traffic controller staffing shortages, has ordered a gradual cut in domestic flight operations—starting with a 4% reduction on November 7, increasing to 10% by November 14—at 40 of the busiest airports in the nation.

On the first day under this directive, fewer than 3% of the 25,375 scheduled flights were canceled, with major carriers like American, United, Delta, and Southwest implementing significant cuts, particularly on less-busy regional routes. United Airlines announced they would reduce roughly 510 flights over the weekend, while American Airlines planned daily cancellations of about 220 flights through Monday. These targeted reductions avoid impacting international flights or key hub routes, aiming to mitigate disruption while ensuring flight safety amid fatigued and unpaid air traffic controllers.

The shutdown has forced more than 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 Transportation Security Administration officers to work without pay, contributing to increased absences and fatigue-related risks. Airlines for America estimates that over 3.4 million passengers have been affected by delays and cancellations since the shutdown began on October 1. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized that the cuts are driven by safety concerns, warning that without action, prolonged staffing shortages could lead to more severe disruptions or even partial shutdowns of airspace.

Congressional leaders have called for greater transparency regarding the FAA’s risk assessments, and lawmakers continue to debate government funding amid the impasse. The upcoming Thanksgiving travel season has raised fears that the aviation system could face even greater strain if resolution is delayed, potentially impacting millions more travelers during one of the busiest periods of the year.

Airlines have pledged to proactively assist passengers impacted by schedule changes through refunds and rebooking options. Passengers are advised to check flight statuses regularly and prepare for possible delays while the federal government and aviation authorities navigate this unprecedented operational challenge.
