Monsoon Session: Spelling Blunder Sparks BJP Jibe at Opposition Protest
BJP mocks opposition’s 'loktantar' banner at Parliament protest.
A political protest turned into a spelling lesson on Thursday when the BJP roasted the opposition INDIA bloc for a glaring error in their protest banner during a demonstration at the Parliament complex. The banner, meant to highlight concerns over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, misspelled the Hindi word for democracy – 'loktantra' – as 'loktantar'.
Prominent Congress leaders including Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra led the protest, standing on the steps of the Parliament’s Makar Dwar and shouting slogans like “Save democracy” and “Stop vote-bandi.” But it was the banner reading “SIR – Loktantar par vaar” (“Attack on democracy”) that caught the BJP’s attention — and mockery.
BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya took to X (formerly Twitter), posting, “It’s loktantra, not loktantar.” His post included a photo of the protest and a sarcastic jab: “Those who don’t even know how to write 'loktantra' are now lecturing the country on democracy.”

Adding fuel to the fire, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla remarked, “Can’t blame Congress. They can neither spell nor save 'loktantra'. They believe in 'Parivar Tantra' and Emergency — at least they can spell that.”
The INDIA bloc has been consistently raising its voice in Parliament against the Election Commission’s SIR in Bihar, alleging it is a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise voters ahead of state assembly elections. But with a misspelled banner now grabbing headlines, their message may have been overshadowed by the mockery.
