Monaco Explosion Injures Ukrainian Tycoon With Reported Russia Connections

Explosion in Monaco injures Ukrainian tycoon under investigation.

An explosion at the entrance of a residential apartment building in Monaco has reportedly wounded Ukrainian-born businessman Vadym Yermolaiev, along with two other individuals, according to local authorities. The blast occurred late Monday evening near a residence close to the French border, prompting an attempted murder investigation by Monaco prosecutors. Officials have confirmed that a suspect fled the scene on foot, and a search operation is currently underway. The motive behind the attack remains unknown.

Chief prosecutor Stéphane Thibault said investigators are treating the incident as a targeted attack, while noting that it is not currently being investigated as terrorism. Authorities believe the suspect was seen loitering in the area before the explosion, based on surveillance footage. Monaco’s Minister of State Christophe Mirmand said early indications suggest the victims were specifically targeted, though it remains unclear why the attack was carried out or who orchestrated it.

The explosion injured three people, including a woman and a 13-year-old child. The woman remains in life-threatening condition and is being treated at a hospital in Nice, France, while the child and another man sustained less severe injuries but remain hospitalised. Witnesses described chaotic scenes following the blast, with residents rushing to assist victims before emergency services arrived. First responders provided urgent medical aid at the scene as authorities secured the area.

Yermolaiev, who is originally from Ukraine’s Dnipro region, is a prominent real estate developer and founder of the Alef Group, which has investments in commercial real estate, manufacturing, and agriculture. He has previously renounced his Ukrainian citizenship and reportedly obtained Cypriot citizenship in 2017. In 2023, he was sanctioned by Ukraine’s government over alleged business links to Russia or Russian-occupied territories. His business empire has made him one of Ukraine’s well-known property developers, with projects shaping parts of Dnipro’s urban landscape.

The attack has shocked Monaco, a small Mediterranean principality known for its wealth, security, and high-profile residents. Authorities have increased security measures as investigations continue into the motive and identity of the attacker. Surveillance footage reportedly shows a man dressed in dark clothing fleeing the scene toward the nearby French town of Beausoleil. Officials have urged caution while the inquiry continues, as forensic teams examine evidence and review security camera recordings to trace the suspect’s movements.
