Mojtaba Issues Statement Following Trump’s ‘Don’t Know If He’s Alive’ Claim
Mojtaba message follows Trump remark, raising uncertainty over status
Mojtaba Khamenei has issued a fresh message thanking Iraq for its support in the ongoing conflict, days after Donald Trump publicly said he was unsure whether Iran’s new supreme leader was even alive. The message, carried by Iranian state media, expressed gratitude to the Iraqi people and religious leadership for backing Iran “in the face of aggression” amid the escalating conflict involving the United States and Israel. However, authorities did not disclose how the communication was transmitted, adding to ongoing uncertainty surrounding Khamenei’s condition and whereabouts.
Khamenei, who assumed leadership earlier this month after his father Ali Khamenei was killed in an airstrike, has not appeared in public since taking office. All messages attributed to him so far — including a Nowruz statement — have been delivered in written form and read out by others on state television, with no verified recent images or video appearances.
His continued absence has fuelled widespread speculation about his health. Reports indicate that he may have been injured in the same strikes that killed his father, though Iranian officials maintain he is recovering. Intelligence assessments and media reports have offered conflicting accounts, ranging from serious injury to claims that he remains capable of leading behind the scenes.
The renewed message comes shortly after Trump cast doubt on Khamenei’s status, stating that Washington had not heard directly from him and adding, “We don’t know if he is living.” The remarks underscored uncertainty within international circles about who is effectively leading Iran during the ongoing crisis.

Analysts say the reliance on written statements — without direct public appearances — has deepened the mystery around Iran’s leadership structure at a critical moment. While Iranian state media continues to project continuity, the lack of verifiable communication from Khamenei himself has raised questions about decision-making authority within the regime.
The latest development highlights the broader opacity surrounding Iran’s leadership amid the intensifying conflict, with geopolitical tensions, military actions, and diplomatic manoeuvres all unfolding against a backdrop of uncertainty over the country’s top leadership.
