PM Modi's Call to Putin Defies US Pressure, Strengthens India-Russia Ties

PM Modi and Putin reaffirm strong India-Russia ties despite US sanctions on Russian oil.

In a significant diplomatic exchange on August 8, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, reinforcing the India-Russia Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership. The leaders reviewed bilateral progress and expressed their commitment to further strengthening ties, undeterred by external pressures.

The call comes amidst heightened tensions, as US President Donald Trump recently imposed a 25% additional levy on India for purchasing Russian oil, effective August 27, bringing total duties to a staggering 50%. Putin briefed Modi on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, with Modi reiterating India’s firm stance on seeking a peaceful resolution.

In a post on X, Modi stated, “Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. We reviewed our bilateral agenda and reaffirmed our commitment to deepen ties. I look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.”
