MK Stalin Challenges Vijay’s Gesture, Deepening Political Tensions Ahead Of Tamil Nadu Polls

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has hit back at Chief Minister Vijay over a gesture made during a recent speech in the state Assembly, recalling the physical torture he endured in prison during the Emergency. The gesture, which was interpreted by the DMK as a reference to Stalin’s jaw injury, triggered a political controversy. Vijay later clarified that the gesture was not intentional, but Stalin responded by recounting his own experience of imprisonment and assault during one of the most turbulent periods in India’s political history.

The exchange comes amid growing political tensions in Tamil Nadu, where Vijay has emerged as a prominent political challenger through his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Two days after Vijay made the gesture during his Assembly speech, Stalin addressed the controversy in a strong rebuttal. Rather than focusing only on the gesture itself, Stalin described the circumstances in which he suffered his jaw injury, saying it happened during torture while he was imprisoned during the Emergency between 1975 and 1977.

Stalin was in his early 20s and serving as a youth wing leader of the DMK when he was arrested in early 1976. His arrest came after the DMK government headed by his father and then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was dismissed during the Emergency. Stalin recalled the conditions in which he and other political prisoners were held, describing what he said were severe hardships inside the prison. He said several prisoners were confined together in a small room and that they were made to endure unhygienic conditions.

Recalling his time in custody, Stalin said the prisoners faced multiple forms of cruelty. He said they were placed in a room with leprosy patients and that 10 people were confined to a small space with only one urinal. According to Stalin, the conditions were accompanied by a persistent stench, and the prisoners had to sleep inside the same room. His account was presented as a reminder of the circumstances surrounding the injury that has now become part of a political exchange between him and Vijay.

Stalin also described the physical assaults he said he experienced while in prison. He alleged that police officers prevented prisoners from sleeping at night and beat them with lathis and boots. He further said that life convicts were deployed to assault the political prisoners. Stalin recalled Chitti Babu, a DMK MP who was imprisoned alongside him, and said he died in jail. Referring to the assault in which he was injured, Stalin said his jaw bones were broken. His account placed the injury referenced in the recent political controversy within the broader context of his imprisonment during the Emergency.

The dispute illustrates the increasingly sharp political contest in Tamil Nadu, where Vijay’s entry into electoral politics has added another prominent voice to the state’s crowded political landscape. His TVK is seeking to establish itself as a political force, while the DMK remains one of the state’s dominant parties. The Assembly gesture and Stalin’s subsequent response have therefore acquired significance beyond the immediate exchange, particularly as both leaders occupy increasingly visible positions in Tamil Nadu politics.

Vijay subsequently clarified that his gesture was not deliberate, according to the account provided. However, Stalin’s response has ensured that the controversy remains politically charged. By recounting his imprisonment, the conditions he faced and the injury he said he sustained during the Emergency, Stalin shifted the focus from the gesture itself to his personal history of political repression. The episode has added another point of confrontation between the DMK leadership and Vijay as Tamil Nadu’s political battle becomes increasingly competitive.
