Michigan Woman Nearly Misses $1 Million Lottery Call She Mistook for Scam
Michigan woman’s lottery app scan lands life-changing fortune.
A 65-year-old Westland, Michigan, woman nearly missed a life-altering phone call she thought was a scam. Valerie Williams, a regular Michigan Lottery player, used the lottery app to scan her non-winning tickets, unaware that each scan entered her into a second-chance drawing. When she received a call from the Michigan Lottery, she hesitated, suspecting fraud. “I almost didn’t answer, thinking it was a hoax,” Williams shared. After verifying with lottery officials, she learned she’d won a $1 million (Rs 8.8 Crore) prize in the $1,000,000 Electric Giveaway.
Williams was invited to spin a prize wheel at Comerica Park in Detroit on September 19. “I was so nervous watching the wheel spin,” she recalled. “When it clicked onto my color, I kept thinking, ‘No way!’” The spin secured her the million-dollar prize, leaving her stunned. “It still feels unreal after years of playing without a big win,” she said.
Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli celebrated the win, stating, “Congratulations to Valerie Williams for her incredible victory at Comerica Park! More exciting second-chance opportunities are coming for players.”

Williams plans to save the money for now, with dreams of a future vacation with her husband. “I’m still figuring things out,” she said. Lottery officials urge players to stay vigilant, check accounts regularly, and watch for legitimate notifications to avoid missing second-chance wins.
