Melania Trump Supports Transgender Athlete Ban While Reaffirming LGBTQ+ Rights

Melania Trump supports ban, backs LGBTQ+ rights stance.

Former First Lady Melania Trump has voiced support for maintaining restrictions on transgender athletes competing in sports categories that differ from their sex assigned at birth, while also reaffirming her support for LGBTQ rights. Her comments were posted on X on Tuesday, June 30, shortly after a United States Supreme Court decision related to participation rules in school sports.

In her post, Melania Trump said she “fully supports the LGBTQIA+ community” but emphasised that fairness and protection for female athletes must also be ensured. She argued that both goals can coexist, stating that it is possible to support LGBTQ rights while also preserving what she described as fair competition in women’s sports. Her message called for respect for all individuals while maintaining clear boundaries in athletic categories.

Quoting from her post, she wrote: “As many of you may know, I fully support the LGBTQIA+ community. But we must also ensure that our female athletes are protected and respected.” She further referenced a recent Supreme Court ruling, saying it affirmed the legal basis for allowing states to maintain women’s and girls’ sports categories for biological females under Title IX and constitutional equal protection principles. She also urged Americans to respect everyone while keeping girls’ sports fair, stating that both principles are essential in a balanced society.

Her remarks came in the wake of a 6–3 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court allowing certain state-level bans on transgender girls participating in girls’ and women’s school sports teams to remain in place. The ruling upheld restrictions in states including Idaho and West Virginia, effectively permitting them to continue enforcing their existing policies while broader legal challenges continue in lower courts.

The decision has intensified an already heated national debate in the United States over transgender participation in competitive sports. Supporters of such restrictions argue that they are necessary to preserve fairness in women’s athletics and ensure equal competitive conditions. They maintain that biological differences can affect performance outcomes and that eligibility rules should reflect these distinctions in school and competitive sports.

Opponents, however, have raised concerns that such bans discriminate against transgender individuals and undermine broader civil rights protections. Advocacy groups have argued that transgender youth should be allowed to participate in sports consistent with their gender identity, citing inclusion, mental health and equal opportunity as key considerations. The issue has become one of the most divisive cultural and legal debates in the country, with state legislatures, school authorities and courts taking differing positions.

Melania Trump’s statement adds a high-profile voice to the ongoing discussion, framing the issue as one of balancing inclusion with fairness in women’s sports. While she reiterated support for LGBTQ rights, her emphasis on maintaining separate categories for female athletes aligns with arguments frequently made by proponents of sports-specific eligibility restrictions.

The Supreme Court ruling and the reactions it has generated are expected to have lasting implications for school sports policies across the United States. As legal challenges continue and states refine their regulations, the debate over how to balance gender identity, fairness and inclusion in athletics remains unresolved. Melania Trump’s comments highlight how the issue continues to resonate not only in legal and policy circles but also in broader public discourse.
