Mehbooba Mufti Claims 3.55 Lakh Waqf Properties Missing Across India
Mehbooba Mufti claims over 3.55 lakh Waqf properties have gone ‘missing’ from new UMEED database nationwide.
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has raised serious concerns over what she alleges is the disappearance of more than 3.55 lakh Waqf properties across India. Citing new figures from the UMEED database, Mufti claimed on Friday that numerous Waqf assets have been removed from official records, warning that this indicates a worrying decline in transparency and protection of Muslim community properties.
Taking to X, Mufti stated that Jammu and Kashmir alone appears to have lost 7,240 entries in the updated database. She described the alleged reduction in Waqf records as part of a broader pattern of “violence, demolitions and disenfranchisement,” arguing that the erosion of Waqf lands represents yet another setback for Muslims. Her post included a screenshot from the UMEED portal comparing data between December 9, 2024, and December 6, 2025.
The data excerpt shared by Mufti suggests a significant year-on-year decline in Waqf properties in most states and Union Territories, except a handful where numbers have shown an increase. According to the screenshot, only Maharashtra, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Delhi, Bihar, and Telangana recorded growth in registered Waqf assets. The remaining regions reportedly show steep decreases, creating an impression that a large number of properties have either been removed or unaccounted for in the updated database.

Maharashtra reported the largest positive jump, with a staggering increase of 26,238 Waqf properties within a year. Bihar also recorded growth in both Sunni and Shia Waqf assets—3,117 and 3,470 respectively. These increases contrast sharply with the negative trends seen in most other states, raising questions about the criteria and methodology used in updating the UMEED records.
The most dramatic decline, according to the data shared, appears in Uttar Pradesh. The state reportedly shows a reduction of 1,30,816 Sunni Waqf properties and 8,901 Shia Waqf properties, the highest drop in the country. Chandigarh displayed the smallest decline among all regions. Jammu and Kashmir, Mufti noted, recorded a decrease of 7,240 properties, reinforcing her claim of a troubling nationwide trend.
Mufti’s allegations have sparked political debate, with her questioning the management and oversight of Waqf assets under the revised database system. She argued that the removal of such a large number of properties from official records requires immediate clarification from authorities. As of now, there has been no formal response from the Waqf Board or the Ministry of Minority Affairs addressing the discrepancies she highlighted.
