Meghalaya Mourns: Legendary CM DD Lapang Dies at 93
Former Meghalaya CM DD Lapang gets state funeral Monday.
Meghalaya is in mourning following the passing of Donwa Dethwelson Lapang, fondly known as 'Maheh,' a towering figure in the state’s political history, who died at Bethany Hospital in Shillong on Friday evening at the age of 93. The four-time chief minister, who had been battling age-related ailments for an extended period, leaves behind his wife, Amethyst Lynda Jones Blah, and their two children. The Meghalaya government has announced a state funeral to honor Lapang on Monday, reflecting his immense contributions to the state.
Born on April 10, 1932, in Nongjri village, Lapang’s journey from humble beginnings to political prominence is a testament to his resilience and dedication. Starting as a road laborer and helping his mother run a tea stall after his father’s death, he worked as a teacher and later a Sub-Inspector of Schools before entering politics. In 1972, he won the Nongpoh seat as an independent candidate, marking the start of a storied career. Lapang served as Meghalaya’s chief minister four times between 1992 and 2010, navigating the state through periods of political instability and coalition challenges.
A lifelong member of the Indian National Congress until 2018, when he joined the National People’s Party (NPP) citing sidelining of senior leaders, Lapang remained a respected statesman. His contributions include being a key architect of Ri-Bhoi district, established in 1992, which transformed the region’s administrative landscape. In 2024, a life-size statue was unveiled in Ri-Bhoi to commemorate his legacy, with tributes highlighting his humility and service.

Former MP Vincent H. Pala, who was by Lapang’s side at the hospital, described him as “a mentor and father figure” whose wisdom shaped Meghalaya’s political and social fabric. Crowds from across the state, including politicians and citizens, gathered at the hospital and Lapang’s Nongpoh residence to pay their respects, underscoring his widespread admiration.
Lapang’s tenure as chief adviser to the Meghalaya government, a role he held until stepping down in October 2024, reflected his enduring commitment to public service. His passing marks the end of an era, with leaders across party lines praising his journey from a tea stall to the state’s highest office as a symbol of perseverance. As Meghalaya prepares for Monday’s state funeral, Lapang’s legacy as a unifying leader and advocate for progress will continue to inspire.
