MEA Hosts Nordic Envoys To Discuss Trade, AI And Renewable Energy Collaboration

India and Nordic envoys discuss expanding cooperation in trade, AI, renewable energy and technology.

India and the Nordic countries on Monday held discussions to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across key sectors including trade, technology, sustainability, and innovation. The talks took place during a luncheon hosted by Sibi George, Secretary (West) at India’s Ministry of External Affairs, for ambassadors representing the Nordic nations in the national capital.

According to Randhir Jaiswal, the meeting focused on expanding partnerships in areas such as trade and investment, digital technologies, artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, renewable energy, clean technologies, the Arctic, and space cooperation. Both sides also emphasised leveraging trade frameworks including the India–EU Free Trade Agreement and the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement to deepen economic ties.

The Nordic region—comprising Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden—has emerged as an important partner for India in sustainable development, clean technology, and advanced research. Commenting on the meeting, Rasmus Abildgaard Kristensen said the Nordic countries and India have significant opportunities to collaborate, particularly as trade agreements between India and European partners continue to expand economic engagement.

The diplomatic engagement comes shortly after the state visit of Alexander Stubb to India earlier this month. During the visit, India and Finland elevated their relationship to a “Strategic Partnership in Digitalisation and Sustainability,” highlighting growing cooperation in technology-driven sectors.

Stubb also attended the Raisina Dialogue as the chief guest, where he held talks with Narendra Modi on expanding bilateral ties. Discussions between the two leaders covered trade, infrastructure, defence, space, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, and education, reflecting the widening scope of India’s engagement with Nordic and European partners.

Officials noted that strengthening ties with the Nordic countries aligns with India’s broader diplomatic and economic strategy to deepen collaboration with technologically advanced and sustainability-focused nations, particularly as the country seeks to accelerate innovation, energy transition, and global trade partnerships.
