Marjorie Taylor Greene Resigns from Congress After Public Break with Trump Over Epstein Controversy
MAGA stalwart Marjorie Taylor Greene announces resignation from Congress following a public rift with Donald Trump.
Marjorie Taylor Greene, a prominent and controversial figure in the far-right MAGA movement, announced her resignation from the U.S. House of Representatives, effective January 5, 2026. The announcement comes just days after former President Donald Trump publicly withdrew his support and labeled her a "traitor" following a dramatic falling-out over issues including the handling and release of Jeffrey Epstein-related documents.
Greene, a Republican congresswoman from Georgia first elected in 2020, stated in a resignation video that she had "always been despised in Washington DC and never quite fit in." She expressed a desire to spare her followers and family from a divisive Republican primary battle initiated by Trump, warning that such internal strife could contribute to losses for her party in the upcoming midterm elections.
The rupture between Greene and Trump was fueled by her outspoken criticism of the former president’s unwillingness to release Epstein files and her alignment with some Democrats on certain policy positions. Greene accused the Trump administration of hiding crucial information related to sex trafficking, which led to a fierce public dispute. Trump responded with social media attacks, branding her “Wacky Marjorie” and pledging to back a challenger against her congressional seat.

During her tenure, Greene gained a reputation for provocative rhetoric and controversial conspiracy theories, leading to significant backlash even within her own party. Despite the conflicts, she maintained a strong following among MAGA supporters until the recent breakdown in ties with Trump marked a turning point. Her resignation reflects deeper fractures within the MAGA coalition ahead of a critical election season.
Greene said she leaves with dignity, emphasizing her commitment to representing Americans who feel marginalized by the political establishment and criticising what she described as the toxic environment in Washington. Her departure may reshuffle the political landscape in the House and signal further realignments among conservative factions.
