Maritime Drone Explodes at Constanta Port in Romania, Area Secured
Drone explosion at Romanian port prompts security response; no injuries reported.
A maritime drone exploded at the Black Sea port of Constanța on Friday, Romanian authorities said, in an incident that raised fresh security concerns in the region bordering the ongoing war in Ukraine. The Romanian Defense Ministry confirmed that no casualties were reported and that the situation was quickly brought under control. Emergency teams secured and isolated the area shortly after the blast, preventing further risk to port activity and nearby infrastructure.
According to the Defense Ministry, the drone self-detonated at around 10:30 a.m. local time while inside the port premises. Romanian intelligence services, coast guard units and military personnel were deployed immediately to manage the situation and ensure public safety. Authorities also evacuated parts of the port as a precaution while specialists assessed the risk of additional explosives or debris in the vicinity.
Officials clarified that the drone was not part of Romania’s military equipment and had no connection to any Romanian armed forces exercises in the Black Sea region. The incident is being treated as an isolated security event, although investigators are examining its origin and how it entered the port area. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the device drifted in from nearby maritime zones or was deliberately deployed.

The explosion comes amid heightened tensions in the Black Sea region, where spillover effects from the Russia-Ukraine war have increasingly been felt in neighboring countries. Just a week earlier, a Russian aerial drone involved in strikes on Ukraine reportedly went off course and struck an apartment building in the Romanian city of Galați, injuring two people. These incidents have intensified concerns among NATO members bordering Ukraine about cross-border risks linked to the conflict.
Raed Arafat, head of Romania’s Department for Emergency Situations, said helicopters were deployed to scan the area for any additional drones or potential hazards. Authorities also issued public text alerts warning residents and workers in the area as a precautionary measure. Arafat emphasized that the response was preventive in nature, stating that officials were acting to ensure no further explosions occurred in populated or unsecured areas.
Romanian authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as investigations proceed into the source and nature of the maritime drone. Security forces remain on alert along the Black Sea coastline, where heightened surveillance has been in place due to the ongoing regional conflict. Officials say further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
