Marco Rubio To Meet Russian Counterpart Over Possible Ukraine Peace Efforts

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Thursday in the Philippines, with discussions expected to focus on the possibility of reviving US efforts to help broker an end to the war in Ukraine. The high-level meeting will take place on the sidelines of a gathering of Southeast Asian foreign ministers under the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) framework. The meeting between Rubio and Lavrov is among the most closely watched diplomatic engagements at the ASEAN event in Manila, as Washington and Moscow continue to remain divided over the conflict in Ukraine.

"We have to have a relationship with the Russian government, even though we have areas of disagreement," Rubio said, pointing out that the United States and Russia remain the world’s two largest nuclear-armed powers.

He stressed that maintaining communication between Washington and Moscow remains important despite major differences between the two countries. US efforts to help negotiate a resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war have largely stalled after indirect talks failed to produce significant progress.
