Marco Rubio Defends US, Says “Stupid People” Make Racist Comments Everywhere
Rubio dismisses racist remarks, calls US a welcoming nation.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday addressed questions about racism faced by Indians and Indian Americans in the United States, saying that such incidents should be viewed as isolated expressions from individuals rather than reflective of the country as a whole. His remarks came during a press briefing in New Delhi, where he was accompanied by India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, as part of his ongoing diplomatic visit.
Responding to a question on reports of racist comments directed at Indians online and in public discourse, Rubio strongly condemned such behaviour and described it as “dumb commentary.” He said that every country has individuals who make inappropriate or offensive remarks, and stressed that such voices do not represent national values. He added that the United States remains a “very welcoming country” that has historically benefited from immigration and cultural diversity.
Rubio further said that the US has been enriched by people from around the world, including India, who have contributed significantly after becoming part of American society. He emphasised that immigrants have played an important role in shaping the country’s development and innovation, reinforcing the idea that the United States continues to be built on global participation and integration.

The US diplomat also commented on broader immigration policy changes being implemented in his country, clarifying that recent visa and residency-related adjustments are part of a wider effort to modernise the immigration system. He said these reforms are not targeted at any specific nation, including India, but are instead aimed at addressing what he described as a broader migration challenge affecting the United States.
Rubio noted that the US has been dealing with large-scale illegal immigration in recent years and said the government is working to restructure how individuals enter and settle in the country. He stressed that the changes are global in scope and not designed to restrict ties with any single country. According to him, the objective is to ensure a more regulated and orderly immigration framework while maintaining the country’s identity as a destination for talent and opportunity.
During his visit, Rubio also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, where both sides discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors. Following the meeting, Indian officials said the discussions focused on expanding strategic ties and working together on global challenges. The visit comes at a time when both countries are seeking to deepen their partnership across diplomacy, trade, and security.
