Marco Rubio Arrives In Kolkata During Four-Day Diplomatic Visit To India

Rubio begins four-day India visit focused on diplomatic and strategic discussions.

Marco Rubio arrived in Kolkata on Saturday to begin a four-day diplomatic visit to India, marking the first visit by a US secretary of state to the eastern Indian city in more than a decade. The trip is being viewed as diplomatically significant amid evolving regional dynamics and renewed engagement between India and the United States across trade, energy, technology and strategic cooperation.

Rubio’s arrival in Kolkata ended a 14-year gap since former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited the city in 2012. His visit also comes shortly after major political developments in West Bengal, where a BJP-led government recently assumed office, adding political significance to the opening leg of the diplomatic tour.

In a post on X, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor confirmed Rubio’s arrival and outlined key areas expected to dominate discussions during the visit. According to the ambassador, topics including trade, defence cooperation, technology partnerships and Quad-related coordination are expected to feature prominently in meetings with Indian leaders over the coming days.

While the US Department of State had not officially released Rubio’s Kolkata schedule, sources at the US Consulate indicated that he was expected to visit Mother House, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa. The symbolic visit is likely to highlight humanitarian and cultural dimensions of US-India ties alongside strategic discussions.

Rubio’s broader India itinerary from May 23 to 26 also includes stops in Agra, Jaipur and New Delhi. Ahead of the visit, he stressed the importance of strengthening energy cooperation with India and said the United States was prepared to expand energy exports. He also described India as a “great partner” while discussing the impact of rising global energy prices and concerns surrounding disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz.

A major highlight of the visit will be the upcoming Quad meeting scheduled for May 26 in New Delhi. The gathering is expected to include Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu alongside Rubio, as the four nations seek to deepen cooperation on regional security, economic resilience and Indo-Pacific strategy.
