Manipur Assembly Convenes Today: New CM Set for Floor Test

Manipur Assembly meets as the new Chief Minister faces a crucial trust vote.

The Manipur Legislative Assembly will convene at 4 pm on Thursday in Imphal, marking the first session since Yumnam Khemchand Singh took oath as the 13th Chief Minister of the state. The session gains significance as a floor test is expected to be conducted on the very first day to assess the new government’s majority.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, with 37 MLAs, and its ally National People’s Party, holding six seats, together command a comfortable majority in the 60-member House. Political observers view the floor test as a formal step to reaffirm stability after a prolonged period of administrative uncertainty.

Soon after assuming office, Singh chaired the first Cabinet meeting late Wednesday evening, signaling the start of governance under the newly formed Council of Ministers. His appointment comes nearly a year after the resignation of former Chief Minister N Biren Singh, which followed months of ethnic unrest between Meitei and Kuki communities.

Following his swearing-in, Singh expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and reiterated his commitment to advancing development and prosperity in Manipur. He stated that his government would focus on inclusive economic growth while safeguarding the state’s rich cultural heritage in line with the vision of Viksit Bharat.

The summoning of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, along with the first Cabinet meeting, formally marks the end of President’s Rule in the state. The previous session of the Assembly was held between July 31 and August 12, 2024, making this sitting a significant milestone in restoring normal legislative functioning.
