Manhunt Intensifies for Brown University Gunman as New Surveillance Footage Released

Authorities intensified their manhunt on Monday for the gunman responsible for the December 13, 2025, shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, releasing new surveillance footage showing a masked individual in a dark two-tone jacket approximately two hours before the attack. The footage, captured near the campus, provides the clearest images yet of the suspect, described by the FBI as approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall with a stocky build.
Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez urged the public to review the videos and contact authorities with any identifying information, while the FBI announced a $50,000 reward for tips leading to the suspect's identification, arrest, and conviction. Investigators conducted door-to-door inquiries in nearby neighborhoods, seeking additional security camera footage and scouring snow-covered areas for evidence.
The search resumed after officials released a previously detained person of interest on Sunday, determining the evidence did not support charges. This development raised concerns about campus security protocols and the initial focus potentially allowing the perpetrator more time to flee the scene.

The attack occurred in a first-floor auditorium-style classroom in the Barus and Holley building during a review session for an economics final exam. The two students killed were identified as 19-year-old sophomore Ella Cook, vice president of the Brown College Republicans from Birmingham, Alabama, and 18-year-old freshman Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, an immigrant from Uzbekistan majoring in biochemistry and neuroscience.
Nine other students were wounded, with conditions ranging from critical to stable as of Monday. Brown University canceled all remaining classes and exams for the fall semester, while heightened security measures were implemented at institutions across the region, including Yale University for upcoming events.
