Man Arrested for Killing Indian Student in Canada
Stray bullet claims Harsimrat Randhawa’s life in shooting.
Hamilton Police have arrested 32-year-old Jerdaine Foster in Niagara Falls, Ontario, charging him with first-degree murder in the death of 21-year-old Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa. The second-year physiotherapy student at Mohawk College was fatally struck by a stray bullet on April 17 while standing at a bus stop near Upper James Street and South Bend Road in Hamilton. Foster also faces three counts of attempted murder, police announced Thursday.
Randhawa, who had just exited a bus and was waiting to cross the street after visiting a local gym, was an innocent bystander caught in a violent dispute involving at least seven people across four vehicles. According to Acting Det-Sgt Daryl Reid, the altercation involved gunfire from at least two weapons, with shots exchanged between the cars. Randhawa succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
“This was a tragic loss of an innocent life,” Reid said at a news conference. Foster, known to police and linked to Hamilton, Halton, and Niagara regions, was apprehended Tuesday. He reportedly used short-term rental properties. No additional suspects have been arrested, but Reid vowed that the investigation continues to identify and apprehend others involved. “We will do everything in our power to bring justice for Harsimrat,” he added.
