Mamata Banerjee Calls Trinamool Crisis A ‘Do Or Die’ Battle Amid Rebellion Fears

Banerjee warns of rebellion amid deepening party turmoil.

Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday described the current political situation facing her party as a “do or die” battle, amid growing signs of internal dissent following the party’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections. Addressing supporters at a protest in Kolkata, Banerjee accused some leaders of attempting to weaken the party from within and vowed to stand by party workers regardless of political setbacks.

The protest was organised against what the Trinamool Congress termed attacks on its workers following the election results, which brought the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to power in the state. Speaking before a gathering of supporters, Banerjee alleged that efforts were being made to break the party through defections and internal divisions. She also indicated that opposition parties opposed to the BJP would soon meet in New Delhi to discuss a broader political strategy at the national level.

Banerjee’s remarks came at a time when the Trinamool Congress is grappling with reports of unrest among its legislators. Political observers and party insiders have suggested that a significant number of MLAs are dissatisfied following the electoral defeat, raising concerns about the party’s unity and future direction. The Trinamool leadership, however, has sought to project confidence despite the growing speculation surrounding possible defections.

The former chief minister also criticised local authorities after her party was denied permission to hold the protest at its preferred venue. According to Banerjee, organisers were not allowed to set up a stage or use sound equipment, forcing the demonstration to proceed under restricted conditions. Nevertheless, several senior party leaders joined the gathering, including long-time loyalists who have remained publicly supportive of her leadership.

The BJP has attributed the Trinamool Congress’s current troubles to public dissatisfaction with its governance, arguing that the election outcome reflected widespread voter anger. The political atmosphere has remained tense since the results, with incidents involving senior Trinamool leaders further highlighting the challenges confronting the party in the post-election period.

Adding to the pressure, Banerjee recently alleged that the signatures of two Trinamool legislators had been forged in connection with the appointment of the Leader of the Opposition, a matter that is now under investigation. Combined with disciplinary action against several leaders who publicly criticised the party after the election defeat, the developments have underscored the internal challenges facing the Trinamool Congress as it seeks to rebuild and reorganise in the opposition.
