Maharashtra Rain Fury: Red Alert For Palghar, Pune Ghats; 10 Districts on Orange

IMD issues red, orange alerts for heavy Maharashtra rainfall today.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Palghar district and the ghat areas of Pune on Thursday, warning of extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places across parts of Maharashtra. Several other districts, including Mumbai, Thane, Raigad and Satara, remain under an orange alert as intense monsoon activity continues across the state. Authorities have cautioned residents about the possibility of flooding, waterlogging, traffic disruptions and other rain-related incidents over the next 24 hours.

According to the IMD, areas under the red alert could receive more than 204.5 mm of rainfall within a 24-hour period. Orange alerts have been issued for Thane, Mumbai, Raigad and Satara, where extremely heavy rainfall is also likely at isolated locations. Districts including Wardha, Nagpur, Amravati, Akola, Ratnagiri and the ghat regions of Kolhapur are expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said Mumbai recorded 134 mm of rainfall between 8 a.m. on Wednesday and 6 a.m. on Thursday. The continuous downpour has already affected normal life in several parts of the city, with waterlogging reported on roads and traffic movement slowing in low-lying areas. Civic authorities have advised residents to remain indoors unless necessary and to follow official weather advisories as more rain is expected throughout the day.

The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for several districts, including Dhule, Jalgaon, Nashik, Pune, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed, Hingoli and Gadchiroli. These areas are likely to experience thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph at isolated places. Officials have urged people to remain cautious, particularly in flood-prone areas and regions vulnerable to landslides.

Looking ahead, the weather department has forecast that coastal Maharashtra, including Mumbai, will continue to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated spells of extremely heavy rain until July 5. Orange alerts remain in place for Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg during this period. Additionally, the IMD has issued a red alert for Raigad and Thane on July 4, indicating a heightened risk of severe weather conditions.

The remaining districts of Maharashtra are expected to witness light to moderate rainfall and thunderstorms over the coming days as the southwest monsoon remains active across the state. Disaster management authorities and local administrations are monitoring the situation closely and have appealed to residents to stay updated through official weather bulletins. People living in vulnerable areas have been advised to take necessary precautions and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
