Maharashtra Family Chooses No Gold Purchase For Wedding, Inspired By PM Modi

Maharashtra family skips gold purchase for wedding ceremony.

A family in Maharashtra’s Wardha district has decided not to purchase new gold jewellery for an upcoming wedding, saying the decision was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for responsible spending aimed at conserving foreign exchange. The family has also invited the Prime Minister to bless the couple and expressed hope of receiving a congratulatory message from him.

Satish Gaurishankar Choubey, a puja materials trader from Pulgaon town in Wardha district, conveyed the decision in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister. He stated that the family would not buy any new gold ornaments for the wedding of his son, Yash Choubey, a software engineer, scheduled for July 1. Instead, the family said it would rely on existing jewellery for the ceremony.

As part of their decision, Choubey’s wife, Seema, has chosen to refurbish and polish her own mangalsutra and present it to her future daughter-in-law. The family described this gesture as both symbolic and practical, aligning with their intention to avoid what they consider unnecessary expenditure during the wedding.

In his letter, Choubey said the decision was taken after being inspired by the Prime Minister’s appeal, which he interpreted as a call for citizens to contribute in small but meaningful ways to national economic priorities. He emphasised that the choice was not driven solely by financial considerations but also by a sense of civic responsibility.

Originally from Jhunjhunu district in Rajasthan, the Choubey family has been settled in Maharashtra for several decades. The family noted that while the wedding would be conducted in accordance with traditional Marwari-Rajasthani customs and celebrations, they wished to set an example by avoiding new gold purchases for the occasion.

The family’s decision has drawn attention for aligning personal choices with broader policy messaging, reflecting how public appeals from national leadership can influence individual household decisions, particularly in culturally significant events such as weddings where gold traditionally plays a central role.
