Los Angeles Tunnel Collapse: 31 Workers Rescued from Massive Wilmington Disaster!
A major industrial tunnel collapse in Los Angeles’ Wilmington trapped up to 31 workers, with all safely rescued by LAFD’s heroic efforts.
A catastrophic collapse at the $630.5 million Los Angeles Effluent Outfall Tunnel project in Wilmington on Wednesday night trapped 31 workers, all of whom were safely rescued within hours, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). The incident, reported at 7:58 PM near 1701 N. Figueroa St., occurred six miles from the tunnel’s sole access point, complicating rescue efforts for the wastewater infrastructure project.
Over 100 LAFD responders, including specialized Urban Search and Rescue teams, were deployed. Workers climbed over a 12-15 foot pile of loose soil to reach safety, with groups of eight hoisted out via crane. No injuries were reported, and all workers were medically evaluated. Mayor Karen Bass praised the responders, stating, “Thank you to our brave first responders who acted immediately.”
The collapse severed communication lines, hindering initial contact with the trapped workers. The LAFD noted that media helicopters disrupted on-site communication, urging quieter skies. The tunnel, part of the Los Angeles County Sanitation District’s sewage system upgrade, was set for completion by 2027. Authorities are investigating the cause, with no further details released.
