Lok Sabha Sees Privilege Motion Over Claims Of Rights Breach During Protest

Congress MP Hibi Eden on Thursday moved a privilege motion in the Lok Sabha, alleging a breach of parliamentary rights and immunities of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and women MPs during a protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence. Eden accused police personnel of using force against protesting lawmakers and demanded action over the alleged treatment of MPs. In a letter addressed to the Lok Sabha secretary general, Eden claimed that the Congress MPs were holding a peaceful demonstration on July 21 in support of students and young people protesting against alleged examination irregularities and paper leaks.

He alleged that police action during the protest violated the privileges and dignity of elected representatives. Eden said it was “most unfortunate” that the Leader of Opposition was allegedly dragged by police personnel and taken to Chhatrasal Stadium. He stated that he was submitting a notice for a privilege motion concerning the alleged breach of rights of Rahul Gandhi and women MPs from the Congress party. The Congress MP alleged that the protest was organised to express solidarity with students who had been demonstrating over concerns related to national-level entrance examinations.

He said the youth had been raising issues over alleged paper leaks and demanded accountability from the government. According to Eden, the Congress has been supporting the demands of protesting students and has repeatedly called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The party has accused the government of failing to prevent examination irregularities and has sought stronger action against those responsible.

The issue has become a major political flashpoint, with opposition parties criticising the Centre’s handling of student protests. Congress leaders have alleged that the government has not adequately addressed concerns over examination transparency, while the ruling party has maintained that steps are being taken to strengthen the examination system. The privilege motion will now be considered according to parliamentary procedures. Under parliamentary rules, privilege motions can be raised by members if they believe the rights, privileges or dignity of the House or its members have been breached.

The controversy comes amid continuing political tensions over student protests related to alleged irregularities in competitive examinations. Opposition leaders have used the issue to target the government, while authorities have defended their actions during demonstrations, citing law-and-order considerations. The Congress has said it will continue raising concerns over examination reforms and accountability in Parliament. The latest move by Hibi Eden adds another dimension to the ongoing political confrontation between the opposition and the government over youth-related issues and the handling of protests.
