Lamborghini, BMW Cars Allegedly Caught Racing Inside Mumbai Tunnel
Luxury cars allegedly raced inside a Mumbai tunnel, prompting police action.
Mumbai Police have registered a case against several drivers after six to seven high-end cars were allegedly involved in illegal racing and speeding inside the Coastal Road tunnel. The incident took place around 11.15 pm on September 3 on the southbound stretch of the Coastal Road near Marine Drive and was recorded by another motorist.
The complaint was filed by Police Head Constable Satish Nivrutti Sangale after footage of the incident circulated on social media. According to the complaint, the vehicles were allegedly being driven at high speed inside the tunnel without maintaining proper discipline, raising concerns over the safety of other motorists using the road.
The vehicles identified in the complaint include a black Lamborghini, a yellow BMW M2, a red BMW Z4 and a Volkswagen Virtus. Police have registered cases under Sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), relating to negligent driving and acts endangering the life or personal safety of others. No arrests have been made so far, although police have identified the vehicles involved and further action is expected.

Street racing is prohibited on public roads in Mumbai, with high-performance driving intended to be conducted in controlled environments. The Buddh International Circuit, described as India's only Formula 1 circuit, conducts monthly open track days where car and motorcycle owners can drive their vehicles on a closed circuit under controlled conditions.
The Mumbai incident comes after similar action against reckless driving involving a supercar in Bengaluru earlier this year. Bengaluru Traffic Police registered a suo motu case after footage circulated showing a green Lamborghini Aventador SVJ allegedly weaving through traffic on Mysuru Road and overtaking other vehicles in an unsafe manner.
High-performance cars are designed to operate at high speeds, but using that capability on public roads can create risks for drivers, passengers and other road users. Police action in such cases highlights the importance of keeping competitive or high-speed driving within designated, controlled facilities rather than public roads where unexpected traffic conditions can quickly lead to dangerous situations.
