Kuwait Airport Hit By Drone Strikes: Radar Damaged, Thousands of Flights Cancelled

Drone strikes hit Kuwait airport's radar as the US-Iran conflict disrupts regional air connectivity.

Kuwait International Airport was struck by multiple drone attacks on Saturday, causing damage to its radar systems and triggering widespread disruption to regional air travel. According to Kuwait’s state news agency, the strikes did not result in casualties but raised serious concerns about the safety of critical aviation infrastructure. Authorities confirmed that while the physical damage was limited, the operational impact has been significant due to heightened security risks.

A spokesperson for the Public Authority for Civil Aviation, Abdullah Al-Rajhi, stated that the airport was targeted by several drones, leading to partial damage to its radar systems. Officials moved swiftly to assess the situation and implement precautionary measures, including temporary suspension and rerouting of flights. Emergency protocols were activated to ensure passenger safety, while technical teams began evaluating the extent of the damage to restore normal operations.

The incident follows another drone strike a day earlier at Shuwaikh Port, Kuwait’s primary commercial port, which plays a vital role in the country’s trade and logistics network. The back-to-back attacks have heightened fears of escalating threats to key infrastructure in the region. Kuwait International Airport, considered one of the busiest in the Middle East, serves as a crucial hub for both passenger and cargo traffic, making such disruptions particularly impactful.

The attacks come amid escalating tensions linked to the ongoing geopolitical conflict involving the United States and Iran, which has already led to significant instability across the region. Several countries, including Kuwait and Bahrain, have imposed temporary airspace restrictions as a precautionary measure. Airlines have canceled thousands of flights, severely affecting international connectivity and creating uncertainty for travelers worldwide.

The disruption has extended beyond passenger travel, with cargo operations also facing major setbacks. Supply chains across multiple sectors have been impacted, leading to delays in the transportation of essential goods and commercial shipments. Aviation authorities and logistics operators are working to mitigate the effects, but continued airspace closures and security concerns pose ongoing challenges to restoring normalcy.

Meanwhile, diplomatic and military tensions continue to escalate. Marco Rubio stated that the United States could achieve its objectives in Iran without deploying ground troops, even as reports suggest possible troop mobilisations in the region. In response, Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian warned of strong retaliatory action if the country’s infrastructure is targeted, urging regional nations to avoid becoming bases for hostile operations.
