Kohli’s Domestic Return: Expert Uthappa Backs His Journey to Regain Match Rhythm
Virat Kohli will play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy; Uthappa praises the move for match practice and preparation.
Virat Kohli’s decision to play in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy for Delhi was finalised three weeks ago, well before any public speculation or reported “convincing” by selectors, according to former India wicketkeeper-batter Robin Uthappa. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Uthappa revealed that Kohli had already committed to the tournament internally, dismissing media narratives that the 37-year-old initially resisted.
“He already knew, and the communication was already that he would play three weeks ago. All this about whether he will play or not—it’s all conjecture,” Uthappa said, adding that for a veteran like Kohli, more competitive matches mean better rhythm and mental preparation, especially at this stage of his career.
Kohli, who has been in scintillating form with back-to-back centuries in the ongoing ODI series against South Africa, will now feature in a few Vijay Hazare matches starting December 24—his first domestic 50-over appearance in years. The move aligns with the BCCI’s directive making domestic cricket mandatory for contracted players unless injured or on national duty.

Uthappa praised the decision, noting that even a “master of ODI cricket” like Kohli benefits from match reps. “How much practice will he get in London or Nets? You need those reps in the middle,” he said, confirming coordination between Kohli, the BCCI, and DDCA had been smooth from the start.
With Rohit Sharma also expected to turn out for Mumbai, the Vijay Hazare Trophy is set to feature two of India’s biggest stars—a rare sight that underscores the board’s push for senior players to stay connected with domestic cricket. For Kohli, the games will serve as crucial preparation ahead of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand starting January 11.
As India gears up for the Champions Trophy in February-March 2026, Kohli’s proactive return to domestic whites signals his intent to peak at the right time—once again silencing doubters with bat, discipline, and dedication.
