King Charles Will Pray with Pope Leo in Vatican After 500-Year Rift

King Charles III and Pope Leo XIV unite in a historic public prayer, bridging a 500-year religious divide.

King Charles III embarked on a historic state visit to the Vatican, where he will meet Pope Leo XIV and participate in a groundbreaking ecumenical prayer service, marking the first such public religious moment between a British monarch and a pontiff since the 16th-century schism. This visit, accompanied by Queen Camilla, signifies a pivotal step in fostering reconciliation between the Catholic Church and the Church of England, of which Charles is the Supreme Governor. The event comes at a sensitive time, overshadowed by recent revelations involving Prince Andrew’s ties to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.

The ecumenical service, set for October 23 in the Sistine Chapel, will unite Catholic and Anglican traditions under Michelangelo’s iconic frescoes, with the choirs of the Sistine Chapel and Saint George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, performing together. Centered on environmental conservation—a cause central to Charles’s lifelong advocacy—the service underscores shared values between the denominations. Additionally, the royal couple will join a service at the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, where Charles will be named a “Royal Confrater” of the adjoining abbey, symbolizing spiritual communion and a permanent seat for future British monarchs.

This visit marks a significant milestone in Anglican-Catholic relations, which have been strained since King Henry VIII’s break with Rome in 1534 over the refusal to annul his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. As noted by Professor William Gibson of Oxford Brookes University, formal diplomatic ties between the UK and the Holy See were absent from 1536 to 1914, with an embassy established only in 1982. The 1961 visit by Queen Elizabeth II was the first by a British monarch since the schism, but Charles’s public prayer with Pope Leo XIV sets a new precedent for unity.

The visit coincides with preparations for the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year, a major pilgrimage event, and follows Charles’s private meeting with the late Pope Francis in April 2025. However, the trip is not without challenges, as the king continues cancer treatment and faces domestic scrutiny over Prince Andrew’s relinquishment of his Duke of York title amid allegations tied to Epstein. These issues add complexity to an otherwise symbolic journey aimed at strengthening interfaith ties.

By bridging a 500-year divide, King Charles’s Vatican visit underscores his commitment to ecumenical harmony and environmental stewardship. The gesture of praying alongside Pope Leo XIV not only honors historical reconciliation but also sets a forward-looking tone for collaboration between the two churches. As the world watches this historic moment, the visit reaffirms the potential for shared values to transcend longstanding divisions, cementing a legacy of unity for the British monarch.
