Kim Jong-un Visits Nuclear Facility, Calls For Rapid Arsenal Expansion

Kim Jong-un visits nuclear facility and vows rapid arsenal expansion.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has visited a newly unveiled nuclear material production facility and vowed to “exponentially” expand the country’s nuclear arsenal, according to state media reports released on June 4. The development signals a continued acceleration of Pyongyang’s nuclear programme despite ongoing international sanctions and diplomatic pressure.

The visit reportedly took place a day earlier, with Kim accompanied by senior ruling party officials. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) did not disclose the exact location of the facility, though South Korea’s defence ministry assessed it as a uranium enrichment site. Officials in Seoul believe the facility is part of North Korea’s expanding nuclear infrastructure network.

South Korean authorities said North Korea is currently believed to operate uranium enrichment facilities at multiple sites, including Yongbyon, Kangson and Kusong. The emergence of this newly reported facility has raised concerns over whether Pyongyang has developed an additional enrichment site or is expanding existing operations. Defence analysts say such facilities are central to producing weapons-grade nuclear material.

During his visit, Kim reportedly stated that North Korea’s weapons-grade nuclear material production capacity has more than doubled over the past five years. He credited the progress to the country’s nuclear scientists while stressing that growing external threats make it necessary to further strengthen the country’s nuclear deterrent in both quality and quantity.

In remarks carried by KCNA, Kim said North Korea must “rapidly accelerate” its nuclear capabilities and confirmed that priority tasks had been set to expand nuclear forces “at an exponential rate.” State media also reported that an internal consultative meeting on nuclear development was held, during which Kim issued new strategic guidelines for advancing the programme.

The release included images of what appeared to be centrifuges used for uranium enrichment, reinforcing assessments that the facility is linked to nuclear material production. Analysts say such developments indicate continued technological advancement in North Korea’s nuclear infrastructure, even as international monitoring efforts remain limited.

North Korea has repeatedly declared itself an “irreversible” nuclear-armed state and has vowed to strengthen its deterrent under a long-term military modernisation plan. The latest visit marks the third reported inspection by Kim of a nuclear-related facility since 2024, underscoring the regime’s sustained focus on expanding its nuclear capabilities amid rising regional tensions in the Korean Peninsula.
