Kim Jong Un Orders Major Expansion of Missile Production Facilities

North Korea ramps up production for 2026.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has directed munitions factories to significantly expand missile production capacity and construct additional facilities to meet escalating military demands, according to state media reports on Friday. During inspections accompanied by senior officials, Kim emphasised the critical role of the missile sector in strengthening the country's war deterrent.

Analysts interpret the directive as part of Pyongyang's strategy to enhance precision strike capabilities, challenge regional adversaries including the United States and South Korea, and prepare weapons systems for potential export to Russia. The order follows years of intensified missile testing, reflecting North Korea's advancing technological ambitions.

Closer ties with Moscow, deepened since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, have seen Pyongyang supply artillery shells, missiles, and troops in exchange for financial aid, military technology, food, and energy resources. Experts suggest Russia may be assisting North Korea with advanced space and satellite technologies, which share foundations with intercontinental ballistic missile development.

In related developments, Kim inspected a nuclear submarine factory, pledging to counter South Korea's efforts to develop such vessels with United States support, while reviewing research into new underwater weapons. He also oversaw tests of advanced anti-air missiles and indicated that modernisation plans will be revealed at the upcoming Korean Workers' Party congress in early 2026.

Observers anticipate North Korea will prioritise systems suitable for export to Russia, such as medium- and intermediate-range missiles, while seeking Russian expertise in nuclear-powered submarines and fighter aircraft to address deficiencies in its air forces.
