Kharg Island Targeted in Military Strikes Amid Heightened US-Iran Tensions

Explosions hit Kharg Island as US, Israel target Iranian sites.

Explosions were reported on Kharg Island, a strategic Iranian oil export hub near the Strait of Hormuz, on Tuesday, according to the semi-official Iranian news agency Mehr. The incident occurred just hours before the deadline set by US President Donald Trump for Tehran to reach a ceasefire deal with Washington.

Axios, citing a senior US official, reported that American military forces carried out strikes on military targets on the island. Kharg Island handles nearly 90 percent of Iran’s oil exports, making it a critical component of the country’s energy infrastructure. Its shallow surrounding waters render most of the Iranian mainland coastline unsuitable for large tankers, emphasizing the island’s strategic importance.

President Trump has previously threatened military action against Kharg Island. On March 30, he posted on Truth Social, stating, “We will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!).” In interviews with international media, Trump suggested that seizing or striking the facility remained a potential option, asserting that Iran “will pay a big price” for its actions.

In addition to US activity, the Israeli military confirmed it had carried out a broad series of strikes targeting infrastructure sites across Iran on Tuesday. In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces said it targeted “dozens of infrastructure sites belonging to the Iranian terror regime in several areas across Iran,” without providing further specifics.

Kharg Island’s proximity to US military bases in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia leaves it particularly vulnerable in the event of escalating regional tensions. The latest strikes follow Iran’s decision to close the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil transit routes, contributing to volatility in global energy markets.

The attacks mark a significant escalation in US-Iran and Israeli-Iran tensions, highlighting the strategic importance of Kharg Island to Iran’s energy exports. Analysts warn that further military actions could have serious implications for global oil supplies and regional security, raising the stakes in an already fragile geopolitical landscape.
