Khamenei’s 14-Month-Old Granddaughter’s Coffin Displayed at Tehran Funeral Ceremony

Iran witnessed emotionally charged scenes during the state funeral ceremonies of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in Tehran, where images of a small coffin belonging to his 14-month-old granddaughter were displayed alongside his own. The ceremony, held at the Grand Mosalla complex, drew thousands of mourners as part of a multi-day national mourning program organized by Iranian authorities. The funeral has become one of the most closely followed political and religious events in the country in recent years.

According to official and media reports, the child, identified as Zahra Mohammadi Golpayegani, was killed along with other members of the family during the February 28 strike that also led to Khamenei’s death. The presence of her coffin at the funeral was presented as part of a formal tribute to all family members who died in the incident. The image of the small, flag-draped coffin placed near larger caskets quickly became one of the most widely circulated visuals from the ceremony.

Khamenei’s own coffin was carried into the venue wrapped in the Iranian national flag, with his black turban placed on top, in keeping with traditional mourning symbolism for senior religious leaders. State television and international agencies captured scenes of large crowds gathered both inside and outside the venue, many holding banners, reciting prayers, and participating in organized mourning rituals. The atmosphere was described as deeply solemn, reflecting both personal grief and national significance.

Officials said the funeral forms part of a broader six-day mourning program spanning Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad, where the final burial is scheduled to take place. Authorities expect large-scale public participation throughout the ceremonies, with tight security arrangements in place across major cities. The extended schedule reflects the importance of Khamenei’s role in Iran’s political and religious structure over several decades.

Foreign delegations and senior political figures from several countries were also reported to have attended portions of the ceremony, underscoring its international diplomatic relevance. The event has been framed by Iranian officials as both a farewell to a major national figure and a demonstration of unity amid ongoing regional tensions. As the ceremonies continue, the imagery of the child’s coffin has become one of the most emotionally striking elements of the proceedings.
