Kenya Reports First Ebola Case, Patient Linked To Congo Dies

Kenya reports its first Ebola case linked to Congo after the patient died.

Kenya has confirmed its first imported Ebola case linked to an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, after a Kenyan citizen who had recently travelled from Congo died in Nairobi. Health Secretary Aden Duale said the patient had fallen ill in Congo about a month ago before travelling by road to Uganda and later flying to Kenya. The patient arrived in Nairobi on October 3 and died on Monday despite receiving supportive treatment.

Duale said authorities were arranging a safe and dignified burial in accordance with established Ebola protocols. The case has prompted health authorities to begin contact tracing and monitoring as they work to determine whether anyone else may have been exposed during the patient's journey and treatment. Officials have identified 28 contacts, including family members, fellow passengers and healthcare workers, who will be monitored for 21 days.

Authorities have also identified 23 other passengers and four crew members who were aboard the flight that brought the patient to Nairobi. The identification and monitoring of contacts are intended to detect any potential infections at an early stage and limit further transmission. Health officials are expected to continue surveillance and public-health measures as they assess the extent of possible exposure.

The Kenyan case comes amid a wider Ebola outbreak in eastern Congo, where the World Health Organization has warned that the response is being strained by violence, displacement and weak surveillance systems. The outbreak involves the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or antibody treatments. More than 8,000 people have reportedly been infected and at least 4,000 have died since the outbreak was declared nearly five months ago.

Kenya, East Africa's largest economy, had also faced controversy earlier this year over preparations for a potential Ebola response. In June, construction of a US-funded Ebola isolation facility at a military airbase was halted after a High Court judge froze the project. The proposed facility also faced protests from local residents, who raised concerns about the potential health risks to the surrounding community. Kenya's latest imported case is likely to place renewed attention on the country's preparedness and border health measures as authorities monitor those potentially exposed.
