Karnataka Dy CM Assesses Drought Damage In Nanjangud, Assures Farmer Relief

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara inspected drought-affected agricultural fields in Nanjangud taluk on Wednesday as the region continued to face crop losses following prolonged rainfall deficiency. The visit was part of his second-day assessment of the drought situation in Mysuru district, with officials providing details on sowing patterns, rainfall conditions and the extent of agricultural damage.

Parameshwara visited Gattawadi village and interacted with farmers whose crops had been affected by the prolonged dry spell. Several farmers highlighted the financial strain caused by crop failures, noting that they had borrowed money to cultivate their fields and were now struggling to repay those loans. They sought financial assistance and other relief measures from the state government to help offset their losses.

During the inspection, Parameshwara sought detailed information from officials on rainfall levels, the area covered under sowing and the extent of crop damage across Nanjangud taluk. Under normal conditions, the taluk records cultivation of cowpea on about 4,500 hectares, black gram on 4,200 hectares, green gram on 3,500 hectares, maize on 3,400 hectares and cotton on around 8,000 hectares.

However, deficient rainfall has sharply reduced agricultural activity this year. Sowing has so far been undertaken on only around 3,500 hectares across the taluk, while crops that were planted have also suffered due to the continuing dry conditions. The assessment highlighted the impact of inadequate rainfall on both cultivation levels and the viability of standing crops.

The Deputy Chief Minister also visited the fields of farmers Shivabasappa and Mahadevappa, where maize and sunflower crops had dried up due to lack of rainfall. After reviewing the condition of the fields and hearing the farmers’ grievances, Parameshwara indicated that steps would be taken to provide relief at the earliest. The visit comes against the wider backdrop of recurring water concerns in the Cauvery basin, where deficient rainfall can intensify agricultural and water-sharing pressures between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Nanjangud MLA Darshan Dhruvanarayan, Mysuru Deputy Commissioner Lakshmikant Reddy, Zilla Panchayat CEO Yukesh Kumar, the Nanjangud tahsildar and agriculture department officials were present during the inspection. The administration’s assessment is expected to guide further consideration of assistance for farmers affected by the drought conditions.
