Kangana Ranaut's Comments on Gen Z Protesters Draw Political Backlash

BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut has sparked a political controversy after making a series of remarks targeting Generation Z protesters who participated in the recent demonstrations at Delhi's Jantar Mantar and other locations. Her comments, posted on social media, criticised the language and conduct of some protesters and drew sharp reactions from opposition leaders, who condemned her statements and demanded an apology.

In her posts, Ranaut described videos and social media content shared by protesters as "puke-inducing" and criticised what she called the language and behaviour of some participants. She questioned the upbringing of the protesters and referred to the movement's use of the term "cockroaches" to describe itself. She also criticised the style of protest and said she found the content disturbing enough to require a "digital detox." The remarks were widely circulated on social media and quickly became the subject of political debate.

The most controversial part of Ranaut's comments came when she referred to some young protesters as "Generation Gutter" and made disparaging remarks about their academic abilities, personal values and lifestyles. She also criticised women who participated in the protests, describing them as "so-called westernised Indian women" and making remarks about their ability to become homemakers. Her comments prompted criticism from political parties and social media users, many of whom described the language as inappropriate and offensive.

Congress leader Bhai Jagtap questioned Ranaut's remarks and said the focus should instead be on the treatment of students during the protests. Referring to allegations of police action against demonstrators, he asked whether the BJP MP felt any remorse over the manner in which students were allegedly handled during the agitation. He said the comments were insensitive, particularly coming from a woman public representative.

AIMIM leader Waris Pathan also criticised Ranaut's statements, calling them condemnable and urging her to apologise to Generation Z. He questioned whether she was familiar with the issues surrounding the NEET controversy and said Prime Minister Narendra Modi should take note of the language used by members of his party. The BJP has not issued an official statement responding to the controversy or to the opposition leaders' criticism.

This is not the first time Ranaut has commented on the student-led protests over the alleged examination paper leaks. In earlier posts, she criticised the methods adopted by protesters and questioned attempts to pressure the government through street demonstrations. Her latest remarks have further intensified political debate around the protests, shifting attention from the movement's demands to the language used by public figures and political leaders while discussing the issue.
