Kalahandi Tragedy: Contractor, Son, and 4 Labourers Die in Septic Tank Incident

Six people die in Odisha after septic tank fall and failed rescue attempt.

At least six people died and one other was hospitalised after being trapped inside an under-construction septic tank in Odisha’s Kalahandi district on Tuesday, with police suspecting asphyxiation as the cause of death. According to officials, the incident took place in Gauda Karlakhunta village under the Madanpur-Rampur police station area when construction work was underway on a septic tank. A local builder reportedly fell inside the tank while work was in progress, triggering a chain of rescue attempts that proved fatal.

Police said that after the builder fell into the tank, five others entered one after another in an attempt to rescue him. However, all of them were overcome inside the confined space, suspected to be due to toxic gas or lack of oxygen. The situation quickly turned catastrophic as none of them were able to exit the structure. All six victims were rushed to the Madanpur-Rampur Community Health Centre, where doctors declared them dead on arrival. One additional person who also entered the tank later fell ill and is currently undergoing treatment at the same facility, officials confirmed.

The deceased have been identified as three masons, a labourer, the builder of the septic tank, and his son. The victims were named as Nimai Pal (48), his son Akash Pal (28), Adal Majhi (55), Manoranjan Hati (27), Chhanda Jal (32), and Bipul Jal (30). The injured survivor has been identified as Pankaj Yani (32). Preliminary reports suggest that the deaths were caused by suspected inhalation of toxic gases commonly present in poorly ventilated septic tanks, though authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause. A detailed investigation has been launched to determine the sequence of events and whether safety protocols were followed during construction.

Authorities have reiterated warnings about the dangers of entering confined sewage or septic structures without proper safety equipment. Odisha Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said the government would take steps to prevent such incidents in future, while the district administration continues its inquiry into the fatal accident.
