#JUSTIN: Russian Drone and Missile Attack on Kyiv Kills 27, Injures Dozens

Russian drone and missile attack on Kyiv kills 27, injures dozens.

At least 27 people were killed and dozens more injured after Russia launched one of its most devastating drone and missile attacks on Kyiv since the beginning of the war. Waves of drones and missiles struck the Ukrainian capital overnight on Thursday, damaging residential buildings and other parts of the city. Local authorities warned that the death toll could rise further as rescue teams continued searching through the rubble of collapsed structures.

According to Ukrainian officials, Russia launched nearly 500 drones and more than 70 cruise and ballistic missiles in a massive coordinated assault targeting Kyiv and several other regions. Explosions were heard across the capital for several hours as Ukraine's air defence systems attempted to intercept the incoming barrage. The scale and duration of the attack caused widespread fear among residents as emergency alerts continued through the night.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko described the assault as the city's worst attack in more than four years of sustained Russian air raids. The strikes caused extensive damage across several areas of the capital, with residential neighbourhoods among the worst affected. Emergency teams were deployed across the city as firefighters worked to control fires and rescuers searched damaged buildings for people who may have been trapped.

Several apartment buildings and residential areas were reportedly destroyed or severely damaged during the attack. Hotels in the city centre and other structures were also affected as drones and missiles struck different parts of Kyiv. Images from the capital showed rescuers clearing large piles of rubble from damaged buildings while emergency workers continued searching for survivors and recovering victims from the debris.

The coordinated attack overwhelmed parts of the city as explosions continued for hours and residents were forced to seek shelter. Ukrainian air defence systems attempted to shoot down the incoming drones and missiles, but several weapons managed to strike their targets. Authorities said dozens of people had been injured, while hospitals and emergency services were treating victims of the overnight assault.

Rescue operations remained underway on Thursday as officials warned that more victims could be found beneath the ruins of damaged buildings. The attack marked another major escalation in Russia's aerial campaign against Ukraine and highlighted the continuing danger faced by civilians in Kyiv. Authorities are assessing the full extent of the destruction as emergency crews continue working at multiple attack sites across the capital.
