#JUST IN: Mehul Choksi Nabbed in Belgium! Extradition on Cards

Mehul Choksi Nabbed in Belgium as India Pushes for Extradition

Fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi was detained in Belgium on Saturday, following India’s extradition request over his alleged role in the ₹13,000 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud, sources confirmed Monday.

The arrest marks a significant step in India’s pursuit of the absconding jeweler, accused of orchestrating one of the country’s largest banking scams.

Choksi, who fled India in January 2018 before the scam surfaced, is accused alongside his nephew Nirav Modi of defrauding PNB through fraudulent letters of undertaking (LOUs) and foreign letters of credit (FLCs).

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleges Choksi’s firm, Gitanjali Gems, colluded with bank officials, causing massive financial losses. Both the ED and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) have filed multiple charge sheets against him since 2018.

After an Interpol Red Notice against Choksi was withdrawn in 2023, Indian agencies intensified efforts to secure his extradition from Belgium, where he reportedly resides with his wife, Preeti, a Belgian citizen.

Previously living in Antigua and Barbuda, Choksi’s movements have been closely tracked since his 2021 arrest in Dominica for illegal entry. As legal proceedings unfold, India remains steadfast in bringing him to justice for the PNB scandal.
