J&K CM Abdullah Promises Free Land to Flood Victims to Rebuild Their Lives

J&K CM Omar Abdullah pledges 5 marlas of land to flood-affected homeless families for rebuilding homes.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced a significant relief measure, pledging five marlas of land to each family rendered homeless by recent floods and landslides to enable them to rebuild their homes. The announcement came during his visit to Duggain village in Billawar tehsil, Kathua district, where he interacted with residents grappling with severe losses to their homes and livelihoods due to unprecedented flooding. Accompanied by Bani MLA Rameshwar Singh, Abdullah also conducted an aerial survey of flood-affected areas in Kathua, including Hiranagar and Lakhanpur, to assess the extent of the damage firsthand.

Abdullah described 2025 as a year of immense devastation for Jammu and Kashmir, citing a dry spell in March-April followed by torrential rains, flash floods, and landslides from August to September. The destruction spans from Kathua to Kupwara, damaging over 350 bridges, approximately 2,000 km of roads, thousands of hectares of agricultural land, and both public and private infrastructure. “Given the enormity of restoration challenges, Jammu and Kashmir is looking forward to a comprehensive relief and rehabilitation package from the Central Government,” he stated, emphasizing the need for robust support to address the crisis.

During a meeting with district officials, including Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Sharma, Abdullah directed the administration to conduct thorough assessments of affected areas and submit detailed ground reports promptly. Bani MLA Rameshwar Singh highlighted the plight of nearly 100 families in villages like Moar, Najote, and Kanthal-Majra, who lost their land and property entirely. He also raised concerns about damaged infrastructure, such as the Jalana Bridge, delays in school construction projects, and the need for amnesty from KCC loans and electricity bills for affected families. Abdullah assured that these demands would be examined seriously, with the government committed to extending all possible support.

The allocation of five marlas of land per homeless family marks a proactive step toward rehabilitation, addressing the immediate needs of those displaced by natural disasters. Abdullah’s hands-on approach, coupled with his call for central assistance, underscores the urgency of restoring normalcy in the region. As Jammu and Kashmir grapples with the aftermath of widespread devastation, this initiative signals a commitment to rebuilding lives and communities with tangible support.
