Jeffrey Sachs: India Will Achieve Developed Nation Status By 2047 at Current Growth Rate

Economist Jeffrey Sachs projects India achieves developed status by 2047, maintaining current growth momentum.

India can become a developed nation by 2047 if it maintains its present economic growth momentum, noted economist Jeffrey D. Sachs said while addressing an event organised by industry body FICCI. Sachs said the country’s long-term progress will depend on sustaining development, investment, and policy continuity over the coming decades. His remarks come as India pursues the government’s “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision aimed at transforming the country into a fully developed economy by the centenary year of independence.

Sachs said India currently occupies an important position in the global order and described it as one of the pillars of international stability and peace. He argued that India should continue to maintain strategic autonomy rather than align itself too closely with any major power bloc. According to him, India’s foreign policy should focus on maintaining constructive relations with all nations while safeguarding its own national interests.

Speaking on regional geopolitics, Sachs said India should avoid being drawn into any overtly anti-China strategy led by the United States or other countries. He noted that while India has genuine bilateral concerns with China, those matters should be managed directly through dialogue and diplomacy between the two neighbours. His comments reflect a broader argument for resolving regional disputes independently rather than through bloc politics.

The economist also questioned India’s participation in the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, or Quad, which includes Australia, India, Japan, and the United States. Sachs said India historically championed the Non-Aligned Movement, a doctrine that sought independence from Cold War-era power rivalries. He suggested that the principles of non-alignment remain relevant in a world marked by renewed geopolitical competition.

On global governance, Sachs said India should be elevated to permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council. He added that China should support such a move, saying the world needs India represented as a permanent member in the top UN decision-making body. Calls for reform of the Security Council have intensified in recent years, with India frequently citing its population size, economic weight, and global role.

India remains one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies, and policymakers have increasingly linked economic expansion with broader institutional reforms, infrastructure growth, and rising global influence. Sachs’ comments come amid ongoing debates over how India can balance rapid domestic development with an independent foreign policy stance. Whether India reaches developed nation status by 2047 will depend on sustained growth, governance reforms, and resilience against global economic challenges.
