Japan to Retire Iconic 500 Series Shinkansen And Doctor Yellow in 2027
Japan will retire the iconic 500 Series Shinkansen and Doctor Yellow due to aging equipment and modernisation.
Japan is preparing to bid farewell to two of its most iconic railway symbols, the 500 Series Shinkansen bullet train and the Doctor Yellow inspection train, as part of a broader effort to modernise its high-speed rail network. West Japan Railway Company (JR West) has announced that both trains will be retired in 2027, marking the end of an era for railway enthusiasts and passengers who have long associated the two trains with Japan's world-renowned rail system.
According to JR West, regular scheduled services of the 500 Series Shinkansen will conclude on January 13, 2027. After its final scheduled runs, the train will continue operating on special and charter services for a limited period before all commercial operations are expected to end in July 2027. The railway operator noted that some units may still be used on certain routes temporarily if operational requirements demand their deployment.
The 500 Series Shinkansen first entered service in March 1997 and quickly became a symbol of Japanese engineering excellence. At the time of its launch, it was the fastest commercial train in Japan, capable of reaching speeds of 300 kilometres per hour. The train significantly reduced travel times between Shin-Osaka and Hakata and became famous for its distinctive aerodynamic design. Since 2008, the trains have mainly operated as eight-car sets on Kodama services across western Japan.

JR West also confirmed that the Doctor Yellow T5 inspection train will cease operations in January 2027. Officially known as the Shinkansen Comprehensive Inspection Train, Doctor Yellow has played a crucial role in maintaining the safety and reliability of Japan's high-speed rail network. Built in 2005, the train conducts inspections of tracks, signalling systems and electrical infrastructure along the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen routes approximately every 10 days. Its bright yellow appearance earned it legendary status among rail fans.
The primary reason for retiring both trains is the ageing of their equipment and systems. JR West stated that maintaining the trains has become increasingly challenging as newer Shinkansen models offer improved technology, better energy efficiency, enhanced safety features and lower operating costs. Modern trains also provide greater passenger comfort and incorporate advanced monitoring systems that reduce the need for older inspection methods.
To commemorate the retirement, JR West plans to organise farewell events and special projects celebrating the legacy of both trains. In a statement, the company thanked passengers and railway enthusiasts for their support over the years, noting that the 500 Series has been in service for nearly 30 years while Doctor Yellow T5 has operated for more than two decades. The operator encouraged fans to enjoy the trains during their final months of service before they officially become part of Japan's railway history.
