Japan PM's India Visit Focuses On Economic Security, AI And Strategic Partnership Talks

Japan PM prioritises economic security and AI cooperation.

India and Japan are set to significantly strengthen their strategic partnership with the release of a landmark Joint Declaration on Economic Security Cooperation during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in New Delhi. The declaration is expected to make economic security a central pillar of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership, expanding cooperation across critical technologies, resilient supply chains, semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), clean energy and strategic minerals. According to senior diplomatic sources, the agreement is likely to be the flagship outcome of the Japanese Prime Minister's visit.

The proposed declaration comes at a time when global supply chains are facing increasing pressure due to geopolitical tensions and strategic competition in the Indo-Pacific. Both New Delhi and Tokyo are seeking to reduce vulnerabilities in critical sectors by strengthening economic resilience while safeguarding national security interests. The agreement is expected to formalise a shared approach to securing essential technologies, diversifying supply chains and promoting trusted partnerships in sectors considered vital for future economic growth.

Artificial intelligence is expected to receive special attention through a separate joint statement to be issued alongside the broader declaration. The two countries are planning to expand collaboration in AI research and development, industrial applications, digital public infrastructure, skill development and the responsible governance of emerging technologies. The initiative reflects the growing importance both governments place on harnessing AI for economic development while establishing frameworks that encourage innovation, transparency and ethical use.

Semiconductors are another major focus of the proposed partnership, with India and Japan looking to enhance cooperation across the semiconductor value chain. As countries worldwide seek to reduce dependence on concentrated manufacturing hubs, the two nations are expected to work together to strengthen production capabilities, attract investments and improve supply chain resilience. The declaration is also likely to encourage collaboration in strategic minerals, which are essential for semiconductor manufacturing, electric vehicles and advanced technology industries.

The agreement is also expected to reinforce bilateral cooperation in clean energy, supporting both countries' efforts to accelerate the transition towards sustainable growth. Potential areas of collaboration include renewable energy technologies, hydrogen, energy storage, green manufacturing and critical infrastructure. By combining technological expertise with industrial cooperation, India and Japan aim to create more resilient and diversified economic partnerships capable of withstanding future global disruptions.

The upcoming declaration marks another milestone in the rapidly expanding India-Japan relationship, which has evolved beyond traditional trade and investment into a comprehensive strategic partnership. As economic security increasingly becomes intertwined with national security, both countries are positioning themselves to jointly address emerging challenges in technology, manufacturing and global supply chains. The Joint Declaration on Economic Security Cooperation is expected to provide a long-term framework for collaboration, reflecting the shared vision of New Delhi and Tokyo for a secure, resilient and innovation-driven Indo-Pacific region.
