Japan Defence Minister May Visit India Next Month, Report Reveals
Possible visit may boost India-Japan defence cooperation.
Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi is expected to visit India in August for talks with his Indian counterpart Rajnath Singh, according to local media reports. The proposed visit would mark Koizumi’s first trip to India since taking charge as Japan’s Defence Minister in October last year and is expected to further strengthen defence cooperation between the two countries.
During the planned meeting, the two ministers are likely to discuss a range of defence-related issues, including cooperation in defence equipment and technology. One of the key topics is expected to be the possible export of Japan’s Unicorn communication antenna system to India. The leaders are also likely to review opportunities for expanding joint military exercises between the Japanese Self-Defense Forces and the Indian armed forces.
Regional security developments in the Indo-Pacific are also expected to feature prominently in the discussions. Both countries have been closely coordinating on maintaining a free, open, and rules-based Indo-Pacific region amid growing strategic challenges, including concerns related to China’s activities in the region.

The possible ministerial meeting follows the eighth India-Japan Defence Policy Dialogue held in Tokyo on July 13. During the dialogue, both sides discussed ways to deepen cooperation in emerging areas such as defence industrial collaboration, technological innovation, cyber security, and space-related initiatives. The two countries also reviewed broader security developments and areas of shared strategic interest.
The Indian delegation at the defence dialogue was led by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, while Japan was represented by Vice Minister of Defence for International Affairs Kano Koji. Discussions covered military exchanges, cooperation between joint headquarters, maritime security, defence exercises, capacity building, defence equipment cooperation, and institutional mechanisms for strengthening bilateral ties.
The two nations reiterated their commitment to enhancing defence cooperation under the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Officials also discussed the upcoming 2+2 ministerial dialogue scheduled later this year, with both sides emphasising the importance of regular high-level engagements to advance security cooperation and coordination in the Indo-Pacific region.
During his recent meeting with Koizumi in Tokyo, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh conveyed an invitation from Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for the Japanese minister to visit India. The proposed visit is expected to build on recent diplomatic engagements and further expand cooperation in areas including maritime security, defence technology, and regional stability.
