Jaishankar Meets US Indo-Pacific Commander Paparo In Delhi
India and US discuss security cooperation and maritime priorities.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met US Pacific Command Commander Admiral Samuel J. Paparo in New Delhi on Sunday, with the two sides discussing ways to advance the India-US security partnership and maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific. US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor was also present during the meeting. Jaishankar said the discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in the region, as both countries continue to deepen their defence and strategic engagement.
Paparo arrived in New Delhi on Saturday for a six-day official visit aimed at strengthening the defence partnership between India and the United States. During the visit, the senior US military commander is scheduled to engage with his Indian counterparts on a range of shared security priorities. The discussions are expected to cover Indo-Pacific security, emerging technologies, regional strategic stability and areas of resilience relevant to defence cooperation.
The visit also comes as India and the US seek to expand their engagement in emerging and strategically important technologies. According to the US Embassy in India, the talks will include digital transformation, emerging technologies, defence energy resilience and the challenges arising from an increasingly competitive technology environment. The embassy said Paparo's visit underscores the strength of the Major Defence Partnership and the US' continuing presence and interests in the Indian Ocean region.

Maritime security remains an important component of the broader India-US defence relationship, particularly amid evolving security dynamics across the Indo-Pacific. Cooperation between the two countries has expanded through military exercises, operational engagement and efforts to improve interoperability between their armed forces. The latest discussions between Jaishankar and Paparo are expected to contribute to continued coordination on regional security priorities.
The latest engagement follows a meeting between Chief of Army Staff General Dhiraj Seth and US Army Pacific Deputy Commanding General Lieutenant General Joel B. Vowell in New Delhi on September 28. The two military leaders discussed the evolving security environment in the Indo-Pacific and opportunities to advance bilateral defence engagement across multiple areas. Their discussions also covered measures to improve interoperability through joint training and military exercises.
The Indian Army had also pointed to the successful conduct of Exercise Yudh Abhyas as an example of operational cooperation between the two countries. The annual exercise is aimed at strengthening coordination and interoperability between Indian and US forces through joint training. With Paparo's current visit bringing together senior defence and diplomatic officials, India and the US are continuing discussions across maritime security, technology, resilience and wider Indo-Pacific cooperation.
