Jaishankar, Lavrov Exchange Views On West Asia Conflict, Prioritizing Peace And Diplomacy
EAM Jaishankar holds talks with Russian FM Lavrov on West Asia conflict and bilateral cooperation.
India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held a series of telephonic discussions with international counterparts on Wednesday, focusing on the ongoing conflict in West Asia and strengthening bilateral relations. Among the key conversations was a call with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, in which both leaders shared assessments of the regional situation and reviewed cooperative agendas between the two countries.
EAM Jaishankar’s dialogue with Lavrov comes in the wake of heightened tensions in West Asia following joint US-Israel airstrikes on Iran on February 28. Tehran has responded with drone and missile attacks targeting US assets, regional capitals, and allied forces, raising concerns over regional stability. In his post on X, Jaishankar described the conversation as “a good telecon” and emphasized exchanges on diplomatic efforts to manage the crisis.
Earlier in the day, Jaishankar spoke with European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, discussing the broader repercussions of the West Asia conflict. He also held a call with French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, exchanging assessments on the regional security situation and affirming continued dialogue in person at a future date.

The External Affairs Minister has also engaged with officials from Italy, Iran, Oman, South Korea, and Germany over the past several days. On Tuesday, he spoke with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi regarding the latest developments in the conflict, agreeing to maintain ongoing communication. Similarly, his discussion with South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun addressed the situation in West Asia alongside bilateral and regional security concerns.
In all interactions, India has consistently advocated for de-escalation, restraint, and dialogue, while prioritizing the protection of Indian nationals and ensuring uninterrupted energy supplies from the region. Jaishankar’s communications reflect India’s efforts to remain closely engaged with both regional governments and global partners during the tense security situation in West Asia.
These diplomatic exchanges underline India’s proactive role in regional and global diplomacy amid crises. By maintaining close contact with multiple stakeholders, the Indian government seeks to mitigate the conflict’s impact on regional stability, energy security, and international relations, while reinforcing its commitment to multilateral dialogue and cooperation.
